The Kitchen is Wallpapered!
/ AshleyThe kitchen is wallpapered! I repeat, the kitchen has been wallpapered!
I’ve been procrastinating revealing the kitchen for a while, And that’s because it never felt finished. The white walls were lovely, bright, and airy, but they felt incomplete. I know you all have been waiting for me to reveal the kitchen for literally years, but it just didn’t feel “done” and I was struggling with the solution. Sometimes design takes time, and this kitchen needed a lot of time.
We have a good amount of wall space because I opted not to do upper cabinets. I decided to instead hang lots of art and decorative plate and spice racks. Yet these items weren’t doing enough to craft the cozy kitchen vibe I was going for. I'll still hang art on top of the paper so stay tuned for that.
I wanted the kitchen to evoke more of a mood than the simple white walls were doing. I want to be able to look back at photos of Margot in her highchair with the same charm that I feel looking at old photos from the 1970s. There’s a richness and texture that I could only get from wallpaper.
And speaking of wanting the room to look like yesteryear, I know this kitchen now gives off granny vibes. And I love that.
I looked at no less than 150 wallpaper samples for this kitchen. I narrowed it down to about a dozen - all in different colors, patterns, and scales. It took a while but I eventually settled on the Whitehall design from Little Greene Papers in the Cedar colorway. I got it at wallpaperdirect.com (who kindly gifted it to me) which is where I ordered my billion of other samples from. (It costs $1 per sample and they carry almost all papers you could ever want).
The paper is perfect (if I do say so, myself). It makes the cabinets and countertops pop (the white walls left the marble backsplash undefined). It has a young playful quality, perfect for a young family. Yet feels classic for a historic kitchen, yet not too fussy. It’s neither too pretentious nor too juvenile. It’s warm, cozy, and just the right about of color.
I love the way the light hits the walls and the shadows create depth. I can’t wait to layer art and decor on top of it! (I’m thinking whites and blues)
I knew I’d be excited about the paper, but I didn’t realize just how much we would ogle at it. It feels like it has always been here - I just wish I realized it sooner!
I’ll be sharing more about the kitchen soon! I’ll also reveal some of the other papers I considered - sit tight.
